Generations of theorists have offered various interpretations of what hypnosis is, how it works, and what it can do. Most practitioners agree that an essential characteristic of hypnosis involves the bypass of the conscious mind, thereby enabling the hypnotist to work directly with an individual's subconscious mind. Deep relaxation is often associated with hypnosis, but is not a prerequisite.

The second factor that is recognized as part of a hypnotic state is a level of highly selective thinking that is acceptable to the person who is hypnotized. Research has shown that the hypnotic state is an integrated state comprised of beta, alpha, and theta brain frequencies. Hypnotists do not diagnose maladies, but rather are more concerned with eliminating unwanted behavior.

The process involves accessing the subconscious mind of the client and discovering the root cause of the presenting problem, so that it may be eliminated. This is possible because our subconscious minds remember everything we've ever felt, said, thought, or done. Often events in life provoke internal negative emotions. If these emotions are left to fester, they can manifest in negative ways. Charles Tebbetts created a diagram that helps to explain how the mind reacts to destructive emotions.

Essential Components for Success

A genuine trust and rapport must exist between the client and hypnotist, principally because most hypnosis is actually self-hypnosis; therefore, a hypnotist becomes a client's guide or "conductor" by mutual agreement and tacit contract. An individual's fear of hypnosis will affect the session. Fear prevents hypnosis from happening, so fears must be identified and eliminated. Some people are afraid to surrender control, forgetting that they always actually have the choice whether or not to remain in hypnosis. Some people fear that hidden secrets might be revealed.

Other misconceptions about hypnosis also abound, the most common being that people associate it with sleep. People who have been hypnotized for the first time often believe they have not entered into an altered state because they have remained alert and have heard everything that has transpired. In fact, a hyper-alertness is characteristic of the hypnotic state, as well as other symptoms, including a tingling in one's fingers or hands, a feeling of floating, and a feeling of heaviness in the arms and legs. Such symptoms are idiosyncratic to each person.

Once the somnambulism state is achieved, a deepening of the trance allows for lasting benefits. People find they are able to free themselves from a variety of physical and emotional problems, which may be rooted in:

  • childhood trauma
  • guilt
  • anxiety
  • anger

Several tests for depth of trance are a part of proven inductions, and offer helpful confirmation to client and hypnotist alike. Such demonstration that an altered state of consciousness was achieved can provide helpful feedback. Lasting and valuable work can be accomplished through hypnosis and guided imagery when the trust between client and "conductor" engenders rapport and confident expectation.*

A Brief History of Hypnosis

The discovery of hypnosis is often ascribed to Anton Mesmer (1734-1815), a Vienna-trained physician who discovered the power of suggestion and the enormous healing power that it offered to his patients.

Thousands of years prior to Mesmer, ancient sleep temples induced individuals into trance and guided them to find the cause and cure of their maladies.

Hypnosis, as it is known today, was discovered by the Marquis de Puysegur (1781-1825), a retired French officer. Puysegur's findings were furthered by Joseph Phillipe François Deleuze (1753-1835), a librarian to the French Royal Botanical and Zoological Gardens, who discovered that suggestions given to a person during hypnosis would manifest during the waking state. Jose Custodio de Faria (1755-1819), an itinerant priest from Portugal, concluded in 1815 that a subject must be willing to cooperate with a hypnotist for any meaningful work to happen.

In 1837, John Elliotson (1791-1868), a professor of surgery in London and also the inventor of the stethoscope. began using the hypnotic state with patients in order to perform painless surgery and to give relief to nervous disorders. Despite enormous successes, his work was thoughtlessly condemned by his conservative colleagues. In 1842, Dr. James Esdaile (1808-1859), a Scottish physician practicing surgery in Calcutta, applied Elliotson's discoveries to induce anesthesia in his patients during surgery. Using hypnosis with thousands of patients. the mortality rate dropped from fifty to five percent. Despite the astounding success of his work, the British medical establishment rejected his findings.

Dr. James Braid (1795-1860) is sometimes called the 'father of modern hypnosis'. In fact, he coined the term for hypnotism, deriving it from the Greek word hypnos - for sleep. Since Braid, many researchers have added new understandings and discoveries to this ancient form of healing that have subsequently succeeded in helping countless individuals.

  • I wanted to let people know that the AZ Center for Advanced Medicine is certainly worth a call!

“In 2011 I realized that it was time to do something about my memory. I knew I needed the right kind of help, the right doctor. On www.acam.org I chose 3 possible naturalistic doctors and showed the names to my integrative doctor who was retiring. Then, I showed the names to my highly respected dentist as well. Both immediately said, “If you can get Martha Grout, she’s the one!” I called her office and learned that I could have a no-charge 15 minute telephone conversation with her to get my questions answered. I made an appointment to start testing and treatment.* Dr. Grout tested me and the test results showed 7 or 8 metals in the danger zone. My mother had died of Alzheimer’s disease when she was 74 years old. I wanted to live much longer than that! Chelation was the answer to reduce the dangerously high levels of deadly metals.* After a series of chelation, with tests taken at intervals to evaluate how I was progressing, my memory, and the tension I was feeling about it, is greatly improved.* AND, another possible effect of metal toxicity, the awful muscle, ligament, and joint pain I had been suffering from for so long has also been greatly diminished in the past few months.* Now, at 72 yrs. old, I am riding my bike 7 – 8 miles up and down hills, hiking and doing gardening…all without pain.* Oh, I may get some of the natural stiffness if I overdo after missing several days of exercise; this is normal to anyone. But the pain used to follow the slightest work/exercise.* Dr. Grout said that I lack certain enzymes which has caused the build-up of heavy metals. I take some supplements for my digestion and I will soon be on a reduced, maintenance chelation schedule to maintain my health.* I also chose to have sensitivity testing and learned that I needed to avoid dairy and wheat, which has improved how I feel.* Another benefit of all this has been the marvelous, kind, caring doctors, nurses, patients, everyone at AZ Center for Advanced Medicine.* I always look forward to being there. I have made new friends.* We share our stories and what we’ve learned. Dr. Grout and staff answer our questions and care about each and every patient. It’s an uplifting atmosphere.* I wanted to let people know that the AZ Center for Advanced Medicine is certainly worth a call,* and/or a visit to learn what can be done about any health problem you’re having. I’m so glad that I found this place.* *Disclaimer: There is no guarantee of successes for any given medical treatment. • Doctors that listen and care!

“I am a chronic Lyme patient and on a very long road to recovery. I have seen many doctors. I can't count the times I have felt like I was on the clock or get my 15 minutes of attention and then pushed out the door. At ACAM I never feel that way, for the first time I feel hope, understanding and compassion from Dr. Grout and her amazing staff!”

  • The technicians made me feel so comfortable.

“I wanted to let you know that I had a really good experience with the whole process of scheduling the thermos and with the test itself. I always god a callback whenever I left a message lll and they were always so professional and friendly. The staff was flexible with working to meet my scheduling needs. They sent me all of the paperwork and prep instructsion ahead of time. They also were patient with waiting for the script from my doctor’s office the day of. And what a great experience the Thermo was in contrast to Mammos I’ve had in the past. The technicians explained everything very well, made me feel comfortable, and even played music while I was adjusting to the room temperature. The test went so smoothly, and I am relieved to have the results back so quickly. It all just reinforced my decision to opt for a Thermo rather than a Memmo.”

  • My life changed when I began treatment at the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine.

“I have suffered with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and Diabetes Type 2 for a number of years. As the MCS progressively worsened over the years, I was basically confined to my home. Certain activities of daily living became impossible or extremely difficult for me to do; shopping, pumping gas, traveling, attending religious services. I began to socialize less and less with friends and family, due to their homes or they themselves not being environmentally friendly. Their laundry detergent, perfumes, or deodorant would cause me to become very ill. My diabetes was also out of control, even with traditional prescription drugs including insulin. My life changed when I began treatment at the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine.* My diabetes is finally stable with the correct diet, supplements, and exercise regimen.* My MCS no longer has complete control over my life.* I still avoid chemical exposure as much as possible but with supplements and a personal air purifier I am now able to be more independent and enjoy a social life once again.* My quality of life has significantly improved only after 2 months of treatment!* I cannot thank them enough!* *Disclaimer: There is no guarantee of successes for any given medical treatment.
