Generations of theorists have offered various interpretations of what hypnosis is, how it works, and what it can do. Most practitioners agree that an essential characteristic of hypnosis involves the bypass of the conscious mind, thereby enabling the hypnotist to work directly with an individual's subconscious mind. Deep relaxation is often associated with hypnosis, but is not a prerequisite.

The second factor that is recognized as part of a hypnotic state is a level of highly selective thinking that is acceptable to the person who is hypnotized. Research has shown that the hypnotic state is an integrated state comprised of beta, alpha, and theta brain frequencies. Hypnotists do not diagnose maladies, but rather are more concerned with eliminating unwanted behavior.

The process involves accessing the subconscious mind of the client and discovering the root cause of the presenting problem, so that it may be eliminated. This is possible because our subconscious minds remember everything we've ever felt, said, thought, or done. Often events in life provoke internal negative emotions. If these emotions are left to fester, they can manifest in negative ways. Charles Tebbetts created a diagram that helps to explain how the mind reacts to destructive emotions.

Essential Components for Success

A genuine trust and rapport must exist between the client and hypnotist, principally because most hypnosis is actually self-hypnosis; therefore, a hypnotist becomes a client's guide or "conductor" by mutual agreement and tacit contract. An individual's fear of hypnosis will affect the session. Fear prevents hypnosis from happening, so fears must be identified and eliminated. Some people are afraid to surrender control, forgetting that they always actually have the choice whether or not to remain in hypnosis. Some people fear that hidden secrets might be revealed.

Other misconceptions about hypnosis also abound, the most common being that people associate it with sleep. People who have been hypnotized for the first time often believe they have not entered into an altered state because they have remained alert and have heard everything that has transpired. In fact, a hyper-alertness is characteristic of the hypnotic state, as well as other symptoms, including a tingling in one's fingers or hands, a feeling of floating, and a feeling of heaviness in the arms and legs. Such symptoms are idiosyncratic to each person.

Once the somnambulism state is achieved, a deepening of the trance allows for lasting benefits. People find they are able to free themselves from a variety of physical and emotional problems, which may be rooted in:

  • childhood trauma
  • guilt
  • anxiety
  • anger

Several tests for depth of trance are a part of proven inductions, and offer helpful confirmation to client and hypnotist alike. Such demonstration that an altered state of consciousness was achieved can provide helpful feedback. Lasting and valuable work can be accomplished through hypnosis and guided imagery when the trust between client and "conductor" engenders rapport and confident expectation.*

A Brief History of Hypnosis

The discovery of hypnosis is often ascribed to Anton Mesmer (1734-1815), a Vienna-trained physician who discovered the power of suggestion and the enormous healing power that it offered to his patients.

Thousands of years prior to Mesmer, ancient sleep temples induced individuals into trance and guided them to find the cause and cure of their maladies.

Hypnosis, as it is known today, was discovered by the Marquis de Puysegur (1781-1825), a retired French officer. Puysegur's findings were furthered by Joseph Phillipe François Deleuze (1753-1835), a librarian to the French Royal Botanical and Zoological Gardens, who discovered that suggestions given to a person during hypnosis would manifest during the waking state. Jose Custodio de Faria (1755-1819), an itinerant priest from Portugal, concluded in 1815 that a subject must be willing to cooperate with a hypnotist for any meaningful work to happen.

In 1837, John Elliotson (1791-1868), a professor of surgery in London and also the inventor of the stethoscope. began using the hypnotic state with patients in order to perform painless surgery and to give relief to nervous disorders. Despite enormous successes, his work was thoughtlessly condemned by his conservative colleagues. In 1842, Dr. James Esdaile (1808-1859), a Scottish physician practicing surgery in Calcutta, applied Elliotson's discoveries to induce anesthesia in his patients during surgery. Using hypnosis with thousands of patients. the mortality rate dropped from fifty to five percent. Despite the astounding success of his work, the British medical establishment rejected his findings.

Dr. James Braid (1795-1860) is sometimes called the 'father of modern hypnosis'. In fact, he coined the term for hypnotism, deriving it from the Greek word hypnos - for sleep. Since Braid, many researchers have added new understandings and discoveries to this ancient form of healing that have subsequently succeeded in helping countless individuals.

I want to make sure the yeast is gone before I do this. • Thankful!

“I have a special reason this year [2012] to be grateful: today, the day before Thanksgiving, is my 12th birthday since the doctors told me in 2001 that I would most likely not celebrate another one. At the time of my diagnosis, giving thanks was the farthest thing from my mind. But I know now that I had every reason to be grateful.* My very advanced diagnosis let me decide that, if I was going to die, I would do so with as much grace, dignity, and quality of life as I could manage.* That meant I would make the decision to take the road less traveled and refuse the ‘standard of care’: surgery, high-dose chemo and radiation. It meant that I would look for things to clean and strengthen my body and immune system, that I would find ways to grow spiritually, emotionally, and psychologically. The nine years prior to 2001, when I was dealing with chronic disease, gave me the tools to create my own healing platform. This healing platform of integrated tools and anti-cancer strategies kept me alive until I found IPT Targeted Low-Dose chemotherapy in 2002 and allowed me to literally watch the cancer leave my body.* Ultimately, it all meant that I would change my focus on life from what I could get from it to what I could give to it.* Best Answer for Cancer Foundation (BAFC) is the pathway that allows me to give back. I’m so thankful for the assistance and guidance that has helped make BAFC a thriving reality. I’m so grateful to the physician members of BAFC: to the doctors who have treated so many cancer patients, myself included. These wonderful physicians give selflessly of their time, their talent and – many times – of their own income to help people in need. They are truly incredible people, and I am honored to know them and call them my friends.* Every day, in every way, I am humbled by and thankful for the patients who come to us, who give us the chance to help them, who have the courage to walk the road less traveled of alternative and integrative medicine. They also remind me of the most powerful healing opportunity of my life and the wonderful road that resulted from it.* *Disclaimer: There is no guarantee of successes for any given medical treatment. • Doctors that listen and care!

“I am a chronic Lyme patient and on a very long road to recovery. I have seen many doctors. I can't count the times I have felt like I was on the clock or get my 15 minutes of attention and then pushed out the door. At ACAM I never feel that way, for the first time I feel hope, understanding and compassion from Dr. Grout and her amazing staff!”

  • Definitely a game changer!

“I just wanted to take a moment to email you to say thank you for your very detailed testing and even considering Lyme as a possible suspect to my ailments.* Had I not gone to see you I would have never even thought of Lyme as a reason for my weakness on my right arm and leg.* In your recommendations you had stated you wanted me to possibly get checked for Lyme and I asked and asked and not one insurance doctor would do the test.* Everyone said that there was no reason to check. Well, we moved to Virginia at the end of November and finally about three weeks ago the neurologist that I went to see for my migraines here tested me for Lyme. The results came back equivocal (1.10 on Elisa) and she simply stated that they found antibodies in my blood. And she started me on Doxycycline (100mg 2x day) for 21 days. I don’t know much about Lyme but will be seeing an infectious disease doctor on Wednesday. In the meantime, we had our newborn (born 1/21/13) tested with the Western blot and another test and per the pediatrician the results were negative. We will continue praying that he will not be affected. … Thank you very much for being that little guiding light that led us in the right direction.* Once again Dr.Grout, continue to do what you do.* You were definitely a game changer for sure.* *Disclaimer: There is no guarantee of successes for any given medical treatment. • The technicians made me feel so comfortable.

“I wanted to let you know that I had a really good experience with the whole process of scheduling the thermos and with the test itself. I always god a callback whenever I left a message lll and they were always so professional and friendly. The staff was flexible with working to meet my scheduling needs. They sent me all of the paperwork and prep instructsion ahead of time. They also were patient with waiting for the script from my doctor’s office the day of. And what a great experience the Thermo was in contrast to Mammos I’ve had in the past. The technicians explained everything very well, made me feel comfortable, and even played music while I was adjusting to the room temperature. The test went so smoothly, and I am relieved to have the results back so quickly. It all just reinforced my decision to opt for a Thermo rather than a Memmo.”
