Disability Benefits & Lyme Disease

|

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with Lyme disease, this condition may cause you to stop working because of the disease’s complications. If you know that you will be too sick to work for twelve months or more, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits, so you can remain stable financially while battling this disease.

Qualifying for Social Security Disability Benefits

When the Social Security Administration (SSA) receives an application for disability benefits, they compare an applicant’s medical records to the “Blue Book,” which is the organization’s medical guidelines. This document lists hundreds of health conditions that qualify for benefits, including the test results and symptoms required to be approved.

Unfortunately, Lyme disease is not mentioned in the Blue Book. However, you might be eligible to “meet” another listing.

For example, if the disease causes severe joint inflammation, you may qualify for benefits due to major joint dysfunction (under Section 1.02 of the Blue Book) that results in limited mobility that requires constant assistance. Other symptoms of the disease that could be found in the Blue Book include cardiovascular impairment and neurological disorders.

If you are unable to meet a listing, but your Lyme disease symptoms and complications still prevent you from working, you still may be able to qualify for benefits through “Medical Vocational Allowance.” This means that even though you do not meet the SSA’s medical requirements, you are still unable to perform the job duties that you’re qualified for.
