BREAST CANCER - OCTOBER SPECIAL
Every fall, throngs of women don running shoes in hopes of curing breast cancer. Yet, the money raised hasn't stopped one in eight women from getting it.
I hope that in my lifetime, the breast cancer awareness groups will get a better grip on the problems of x-raying our breasts. The one thing everyone can agree on that causes cancer is radiation. Recently, a national task force recommended less mammography, saying the modest benefit of mammograms must be weighed against the harms - false positives, overtreatment, and radiation exposure. Although some lives are saved by early detection, many more may be damaged by biopsies and medical intervention applied to tumors that otherwise would disappear spontaneously.
Thermography is the future and it is here now. It does not use radiation; it uses infrared light to see signs of tumor formation. It can detect suspicions of cancer sometimes 10 years before mammography can. It doesn't hurt (no need to squeeze). It's okay with implants and fibrous breasts. Thermography is the better screening device - and early screening saves lives.
For the month of October we offer you a special: get acquainted with thermography if you haven't already. Introduce a friend. The thermogram, plus the official radiologist's assessment, plus the office visit with us - all for just $250. Call us, 480-240-2600, make an appointment and read about thermography and breast cancer and IPT for treatment on our website. |
WELCOME DR. MURRAY "BUZ" SUSSER
Murray R. Susser, MD, has joined the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine. He was an early advocate for nutrition and chelation. Following a five-and-a-half year stint as an Air Force fighter pilot, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School in 1966. He went into family practice, and very quickly became open to alternative solutions because he saw that people weren't getting better with conventional treatment. His open-minded views and the fact he enjoys listening to patients have made him a popular doctor.
Dr. Susser worked with medical pioneers including Harold Harper, MD; Carlton Fredricks, PhD; Robert Atkins, MD; Charles Farr, MD, PhD; and Warren Levin, MD. In 1991, Dr. Susser published the book, Solving the Puzzle of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. He is the former President of the American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM) and the American Association for Health Freedom (AAHF). He is a charter member of the American Holistic Medical Association.
Dr. Susser is at the Center on Tuesdays and specializes in:
- Lyme Disease and associated diseases
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
- Nutritional Therapy
- IV detoxification for heavy metals
- Longevity medicine
- Bio-identical hormones
- Chelation Therapy
- Oxidative Therapy

COMBINATION FLU AND H1N1 VACCINE THIS SEASON
A bill was recently submitted to the New York State Legislature that would make it mandatory for all health care workers to receive the flu shot. If it were to pass, it would be the first of its kind in the nation.
The vaccine prepared for the 2010-2011 season is a combination shot - it contains two strains of seasonal flu and the H1N1 strain from last winter. So everyone who gets the seasonal flu shot will also get the swine flu shot. Only about 24% of Americans rolled up their sleeves for the swine flu shot last year.
And the CDC recently changed their recommendations to include a flu shot for almost everyone over the age of 6 months, saying: "This represents an expansion of the previous recommendations for annual vaccination of all adults aged 19-49 and is supported by evidence that annual influenze vaccination is a safe and effective preventive health action with potential benefits in all age groups."
Yikes. The medical literature is quite clear that flu shots don't do much good, even for the elderly, and that vitamin D is superior. And of course the flu still still comes with thermisol, the mercury perservative. My advice: have your vitamin D level checked and don't try to outsource your natural immunity to a vaccine that has a poor benefit/risk ratio.

TELL US HOW YOU EAT: Charles' story
My food story is a rather complicated one. I grew up in the South which means a diet full of soda, sugar, fried food and bbq. If anyone knows Biscuitville or Bojangles restaurants, these are staples in the South and quite frankly National Treasures. Despite this, I managed to stay fairly thin for most of my childhood. In college, I refined my eating habits and cooking. Then through self-education I improved my diet with more multi-grain foods, low fat meats and more vegetables. This was an improvement, or so I thought at the time. College progressed well and I married my high school sweetheartin between studies.
After college, I started my first permanent job and moved to Arizona. Life was good and my wife and I explored our new home in the desert. We desired to have low fat, heart healthy food which we thought was good for us. We limited sugar, but did indulge from time to time. Also at this time, I engaged in a regular exercise program (more a lifestyle). I started to mountain bike regularly. Many times getting up at 4:30AM to drive to South Mountain in Phoenix to mountain bike at dawn.
So where did it all go wrong? Well, that is tough to pinpoint exactly. Hindsight is 20/20, but my memory is fuzzy (probably from the gluten). What I know for sure is that I did start to gain significant weight over those next 10 years and I mountain biked less and less. In addition, I developed severe allergies here. My pollen allergies continued to get significantly worse each year despite allergy treatment. Another problem that started at some point is I noticed certain foods didn't agree with me. I frequently thought I was getting food poisoning or that my stomach was weak compared to my friends and colleagues. It was not uncommon for me to get severe diarrhea after eating food. I simply accepted it as part of my way of life.
Fast-forward to present day. Now, thanks to Dr. Grout, I am a completely different person. I was misdiagnosed and mistreated by my previous doctors and specialists. Today I know that I have major food allergies (gluten, cow's milk (casein), corn, soy, yeasts, tomato and peanut-just to name a few). This eliminates many food choices here in America. It was difficult, at first, but we managed to find a few products we could use that would satisfy the no gluten, no dairy, no corn, no soy. We quickly settled on a modified Mediterranean style diet (essentially no bread for me). Most dinners consist of grilled chicken, pork or fish with grilled or sautéed vegetables. On occasion, I make a gluten free pizza with goat cheese and pepperoni. Breakfasts are typically eggs, fruit or gluten free cereal. However, to please the kids, it is popular to make gluten free waffles, pancakes or muffins. We have had great success in producing very tasty reproductions of gluten-full recipes, but using Rice Milk and gluten free flours.
After four months of seeing Dr. Grout, I have lost 30 pounds in weight and dropped approximately 10% on percent body fat. The weight has dropped dramatically for me since switching to my new diet. Without the gluten and other allergens I don't feel hungry all the time like I did in the past. I continue to eat and I have a lot more energy than I did on the old diet. I now have sufficient energy to maintain an exercise routine and I have started mountain biking again. I feel a lot healthier now and I believe my GI system is stable. I still get sick from time to time, but only if I go out to eat. I am not finished with my weight loss and with tweaks to my new lifestyle, but it has been an exciting journey for me.
