Desiccated Thyroid is Here

FDA Finally Admits BPA is a Concern

HCG Weight Loss

We have desiccated thyroid now

Desiccated thyroid has been hard to come by for the last 18 months. We are pleased to announce we have Nature-Throid.

A little background on all the commotion: The brand name "Armour" was reformulated in 2009 and some patients reported a return of their old hypothyroid symptoms. Meanwhile, doctors and pharmacists were told there were shortages of any brand of desiccated thyroid. Next came the chilling news last summer that Time-Cap Labs, producer of a generic version of Armour, was ordered by the FDA to stop production. The FDA decided to classify the company's product, available for more than a century, as an unapproved new drug which requires a new drug application. Much speculation and confusion followed. Patients at the "Save Natural Thyroid Coalition" called the FDA's consumer information line (888-463-6332) and got all kinds of different answers.

RLC Labs, an alternative to Armour, manufactures Nature-Throid and Westhroid. These are both natural desiccated thyroid drugs, available by prescription. The primary difference is that Nature-Throid is hypoallergenic, for those who might be sensitive to some of the filler and binders.

Thyroid generally does not get the respect it deserves. It is almost as fundamental as food. Thyroid hormone is like gasoline to each of the 60 trillion or so cells in the human body. Without enough gas, the body sputters. Then symptoms show up - depression, aches and pains, easy weight gain, fatigue, dry skin or hair, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. It may take 3-9 months, but after your body has had a full dose for a while, you feel better, you think more clearly, and you look better - less puffy. You are less susceptible to infections and chronic disease. You look and feel the way you should when you have a full gas tank.

The time-honored, most accurate way to test for thyroid deficiency is to take a basal temperature. First thing when you wake up, but before you get up, stick a thermometer under your arm for 10 minutes for 10 days. If the temperatures are less than 97.8, that is highly indicative of hypothyroidism. In other words, you don't have enough gas in the tank to keep the car warm. I find the most accurate readings come from the old fashioned-mercury thermometers because you can keep them under your arm for 10 minutes. One of our associates says her numbers were higher when she used the mercury thermometer for just a couple minutes - she got a different number when she re-read the directions and kept the thermometer in place for 10 minutes instead of 2.

FDA Finally Shifts Its Position on Safety of BPA

"We have some concern, which leads us to recommend reasonable steps the public can take to reduce exposure to BPA," said Joshua Sharfstein, FDA's deputy commissioner, January 15. The chemical industry, which has been fighting restrictions, said the announcement was good news, however, because the FDA did not tell people to stop using products containing the chemical Bisphenol A.

This is a major reversal from the agency's long standing position that BPA is completely safe. BPA is one of the world's highest production volume chemicals, with over 6.4 billion pounds produced annually, and it more than 90 percent of Americans have detectable levels in their bodies.

Canada declared BPA a toxin and banned it from baby bottles in 2008. Because the FDA has failed to act, Senator Dianne Feinstein and others submitted a bill that would block BPA from all food and drink packaging.

HCG Weight Loss

HCG weight lossThis is the one that really works. The kind of fat that is soooo tough to lose - women's thighs, men's belly - is same fat mobilized during pregnancy by the HCG hormone. That is why the HCG weight loss program works for so many people when nothing else has.

We use a homeopathic version of the Human Chorionic Gonadotropin hormone for weight loss. It works much better than diet and exercise alone because it actually makes you use up your own excess calories. Calories stored in the fat "safe deposit box" of thighs and hips are released into the bloodstream. That is why you do not feel very hungry or need to eat as much food on this regimen. We recognize that this method of weight loss is a tool to start making a change. We work with you regarding detoxification as you lose weight, and give you a plan for a whole food diet to implement for the future. You may wish to transition from the weight loss program into the First Line Therapy nutritional and lifestyle program, so that you can maintain this healthy weight loss into the future.

Why do we use the homeopathic version of HCG? Because the homeopathic version gives us the information from the hormone without having to use the actual hormone itself. It's easier on the body and does not raise long-term concerns about complications from the hormone. It is kind of like using the remote control to change the TV channel instead of getting up and physically pressing a button.

New! Women's Health Services

Gayle MasonGayle Mason, RN, MSN, WHNP-BC, has joined the Arizona Center For Advanced Medicine. Gayle is a nationally certified Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and holds a subspecialty certification as a Menopause Clinician. As a Nurse Practitioner, she is able to assess and evaluate as well as diagnose and prescribe.

Services:

Woman's Wellness Exam - An annual exam that starts with a medical history covering issues of diet and lifestyle. Includes a head-to-toe physical exam, Pap smear, rectal exam, breast exam, check for sexually transmitted infections, and counseling for contraception and menopause.

Teenage Woman Wellness Exam - Young women can make good decisions when given factual information. We discuss how sexually transmitted infections occur, how to avoid both infections and pregnancy, and the urban myths of how to prevent conception. No value judgments, just information.

Mid-Life Services - Hormones can begin fluctuating while we are still in our 30s. Issues can involve vaginal atrophy, changes in libido, painful intercourse.

Bioidentical Hormones - These are biologically the same as what our own body produces, so there are fewer side effects than with synthetic hormones. Hormone replenishment is not just about the sex hormones - estrogen, progesterone, testosterone - but also DHEA, cortisol, and thyroid hormones.

Thermography - Breast disease screening. Thermography is a safer alternative to the radiation and compression of mammography.

Breast Health - Self breast exams, minimizing trauma to the breast, the energetic problems with underwire bras, what is normal discharge, fibrocystic breast disease, the dietary impacts of caffeine and vitamin E.

Osteoporosis Prevention - An important part of the Wellness Exam revolves around preventing osteoporosis. We talk about weight-bearing exercises, diet, vitamin D. We have a simple urine test that can measure if you are breaking down bone faster than you are building it up.

Heart Health - Heart disease is the number one killer of women. The heart experiences all the emotions, and any disease of the heart is often related to emotional turmoil or upset. Dietary fats certainly play a role in heart disease. We talk about nutrition, which fats are good for you and which are unhealthy. We talk about aerobic exercise and how you can vary your exercise routine to benefit both your bones and your heart.
