Probiotics may prevent colon cancer

October 2008

According to research published in BMC Cancer, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) exhibit anti-tumor activity. An extract of a probiotic species of Bifidobacterium actually activated macrophages (fighting cells of the immune system which destroy abnormal cells), slowed the growth of cancer cells in a cell culture, and increased the production of TNF-a, a blood factor which is toxic to cancer cells. The conclusion of the paper is that probiotics may well improve our health by preventing the occurrence of colon cancer.

Dr. Grout's Comment:
We have more bacterial in our bodies than we do cells – and we have about a trillion cells. It stands to reason that the health of the bacterial population is closely related to our own health. I wonder how many cases of colon cancer could have been prevented if we simply had encouraged the addition of probiotics with meals for all those people who took their prescribed antibiotics on an empty stomach.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Rising in Women

October 27, 2008

After declining for four decades, rheumatoid arthritis is on the rise among women in the United States, according to new research from Mayo Clinic, presented recently at the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology in San Francisco.

The disease is now diagnosed in about 54 women out of every 100,000, compared to about 36 women of every 100,000 in earlier decades. The incidence for men remains at about 29 per 100,000.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a painful autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints.

"This is a significant finding and an indicator that more research needs to be done to better understand the causes and treatment of this devastating disease," said Dr. Sherine E. Gabriel, a Mayo Clinic rheumatologist and lead investigator on the study, in a press release.

The reasons behind the rise aren't known, but researchers speculate that environmental factors may be playing a role – smoking, coffee intake, alcohol consumption. Other researchers believe one or more infectious agents might act as a trigger for the disease; however, no definitive research has identified a virus or other agent. Because women are more vulnerable, researchers have speculated that sex hormones, reproductive factors or possibly sexually transmitted infections may play a role.

Dr. Grout's Comment:
I would add stress, gluten, food allergies, heavy metal toxicities, and vitamin D deficiency to the list of what can factor into rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatologists tend to treat first with the prescription pad. Patients are prescribed a pricey course of Enbrel or Humira; the new TNF blockers have been "black boxed" for their increasing cancer danger.

As a homeopathic physician, I can tell you that looking for food allergies pays HUGE dividends. Some people report that RA vanishes when they remove gluten and other inflammatory foods from their diet. Chronic inflammation can cause leaky gut and the resulting cascade of events is a breeding ground for low-level, chronic infections that play a role in autoimmune diseases. Determination of heavy metal toxicities is crucial. Almost every patient we test is significantly low in vitamin D and that is easy to correct. New research makes the case that vitamin D helps protect older women against rheumatoid arthritis.

Pentagon researches alternative treatments

October 17, 2008

The Pentagon is seeking new ways to treat troops suffering from combat stress or brain damage by researching such alternative methods as acupuncture, meditation, yoga and the use of animals as therapy, military officials said.

"This new theme is a big departure for our cautious culture," Dr. S. Ward Casscells, the Pentagon's assistant secretary for health affairs, told USA TODAY.

Casscells said he pushed hard for the new research, because "we are struggling with" post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) "as we are with suicide and we are increasingly willing to take a hard look at even soft therapies." About 300,000 Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans suffer from PTSD or major depression, and about 320,000 may have experienced at least a mild concussion or brain injury in combat, according to a RAND Corp. study released this year.

So far this year, the Pentagon is spending $5 million to study the therapies. In the previous two years, the Pentagon had not spent any money on similar research, records show.

Some military hospitals and installations already use alternative therapies, such as acupuncture as stress relievers for patients. The research will see whether the alternatives work so the Pentagon can use them more. Many of the treatments have been used for centuries, said Army Brig. Gen. Loree Sutton, head of the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury.

Dr. Grout's Comment
Returning soldiers are often hobbled by prolonged physical and mental injuries from homemade bombs and the unremitting anxiety of fighting a hidden enemy along blurred battle lines. We owe our veterans the very best we have to offer, not denials, and not just pharmaceutical band aids on health problems. Ironically, because the government is balking at the high price of caring for veterans, the military may break through the blizzard of paid drug ads and teach the public about the value of non-toxic, alternative treatments.

Research started this past summer has already shown acupuncture to be effective in relieving depression and PTSD symptoms. An Army colonel told USA Today that improvements "were relatively rapid and clinically significant."

Of course. And if the military objectively studies alternatives for the treatment of depression, they will find treatments like hypnosis, brain training, and even a diet rich in omega-3s can also bring better results than Prozac.

New Jersey parents resist mandatory flu shots for kids

October 16, 2008

The AP reported that many New Jersey parents are furious over a first-in-the-nation requirement that children must get a flu shot in order to attend preschools and day-care centers. The decision should be the parents', not the state's, they contend. Last December, the state Public Health Council approved the policy that is taking effect now under which, "children from six months to five years old who attend a child-care center or preschool have until December 31 to receive the flu vaccine, along with a pneumococcal vaccine." Protesters were outside the New Jersey Statehouse on Thursday, decrying the policy and voicing support for a bill that would allow parents to opt out of mandatory vaccinations for their children. Many in the crowd held up signs saying "Our Kids, Our Choice," or "Mother Knows Best."

Dr. Grout's Comment:
What is wrong with the New Jersey legislature and the New Jersey Medical Society? We are now requiring parents to inject their children with a flu shot? First, the flu shot has mercury, the multi-dose vials are preserved with thimerosal. Second, the flu shots are notoriously ineffective because the doctors who decide the formula have to guess what strains of flu will come 'round the next year. Third, healthy children recover from the flu and have a stronger immune system for the experience. Have we learned nothing from the epidemics of autism, ADD and other developmental delays? Are we really so arrogant as to think that it can't happen to our own children? How many physicians do I know who have autistic children themselves? This legislation is a very sad commentary on a profession whose oath is "First, do no harm."

Pediatricians Double Vitamin D Requirement

October 13, 2008

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released new guidelines on vitamin D because medical conditions attributable to low vitamin D levels such as rickets appear to be on the rise in the U.S.

Rickets first became a problem in the U.S. during the 18th century, in part because smoke from factories shielded people from the sun's rays – an important source of vitamin D. Rates of the disease, which weakens bones, were brought down through improved nutrition.

"There's been increased case reports and people describing it over the past five to 10 years; whether this is a true increase is unclear," said Dr. Steven Abrams, a pediatrician at the Baylor College of Medicine who has been on previous AAP vitamin D guideline committees.

Because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not have exact numbers on rickets cases, recent concerns about its return are difficult to quantify.

Sun exposure, while necessary for vitamin D, is discouraged because of the risks of skin cancer. And mothers are encouraged to breastfeed their infants -- but with more than half of American women potentially vitamin D deficient, and with breast milk not a good source of the vitamin in general, many babies will not get adequate amounts from their diets.

Dr. Grout's Comment:
In 2003, the AAP cut the RDA for vitamin D from 400IU to 200IU. Now they are reversing themselves.

About 90 percent of the vitamin D in your body is made when your skin is exposed to sunlight. Just 15-20 minutes in the summer sun produces a blast of 10,000-20,000 international units. Ancient humans spent all their time outdoors and got such doses.

In the 1980s, dermatologists began warning about the dangers of sunlight. Their advertisements were heavily funded by the cosmetics and sun screen industry. Today, there is a virtual conveyer belt of research out about vitamin D's role in roles in cancer prevention, regulation of blood pressure, insulin production, mental health, and regulation of immune function and cell growth. The research is piling up that omega 3 deficiencies are a far more significant risk factor for deadly skin cancers than sun exposure.

"The recommendation is going to be essentially a supplement for every child and adolescent in the United States," said Dr. Frank R. Greer, a pediatrician at the University of Wisconsin and one of the authors of the guidelines.

Supplement? Is someone trying to sell something here that can be readily had for free?

Celiac disease discussion goes mainstream

October 10, 2008

The New York Times reports that ingesting even small quantities of gluten causes the immune system to attack the lining of the small intestine in people with celiac disease, "hampering the absorption of vital nutrients like iron, calcium, and fat. Untreated, it can lead to a wide range of problems including anemia, infertility, osteoporosis, and cancer." According to Dr. Peter H. R. Green, a professor at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia and director of the university's Celiac Disease Center, "Celiac is grossly under diagnosed in this country." He added that "at least one percent of the population" has "the disease, but...only a fraction of the cases" have been diagnosed. Typically, "celiac disease is diagnosed through an inexpensive panel of blood tests." At present, "the only known treatment is a gluten-free diet." People with the condition should avoid "everything containing gluten, including cereal, bread, and beer, as well as many seasonings, food additives, and nonfood items like some vitamins and toothpastes."

Dr. Grout's Comment:
At least the establishment is acknowledging that celiac disease is treatable by avoiding gluten in all forms. However, there are the millions of people with gluten sensitivity who have not yet progressed to the state of illness where they have organ damage and can be diagnosed with celiac disease. These are the people with vague abdominal pain, bloating, gas, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, brain fog, and a host of other symptoms – even ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease - which their doctors insist could not possibly be related to gluten sensitivity, but which miraculously disappear when their sufferers go on a gluten-free diet.

It is interesting to note that Dr. Green also said the current "lack of pharmaceutical backing for the disease" — the fact that it is controlled by diet, not drugs — is behind the scant research, medical education and public awareness.

Brain pathway's connection to obesity, diabetes

October 3, 2008

Poor diets may trigger a signaling system which prompts the body to consume even more. When the signals – involving a protein linked to inflammation – were blocked in mice, they maintained normal weight. Dongsheng Cai, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Wisconsin, and colleagues, "investigated metabolic inflammation, a chronic, low-level condition often seen in obesity-related diseases. In mice, a protein connected to inflammatory reactions appeared to be switched on when the animals were given a high fat, high sugar diet." Additionally, "once the protein was switched on, the mice started eating more, suggesting that it was part of a pathway involving the regulation of food intake."

A ‘master switch' of inflammation was turned on in the hypothalamus of mice on a high-fat diet, according to the study published in the Oct. 3 issue of the journal Cell. "'Chronic over nutrition' flipped on the inflammation switch," researchers noted. "With that master switch turned on in the hypothalamus, the mice gained weight and became resistant to insulin...and leptin (a hormone involved in feeling full." Next, the investigators "used genetic engineering to flip that master switch off in the hypothalamus of other mice. Those mice were 'significantly protected' from becoming obese, even on a high-fat diet." Suppressing the general disease pathway in the hypothalamus "might be a potent weapon in the war to fight the burgeoning epidemic of overweight and obesity and its attendant problems, including heart disease, and even cancer."

Dr. Grout's Comment:
This explains at least part of the reason that specific diets work for some people and not for others. What is inflammatory for one person may not be inflammatory for another. In Chinese medicine, both sugar and red meats are considered to be "hot" or inflammatory. Edgar Cayce would prescribe an "alkalinizing" diet for people – no sugars, minimal meats, lots of fruits and vegetables. Some people do very well on a diet high in whole grains. Other people just want to eat the entire pantry when they start eating whole grains. Once insulin resistance is a factor, then blood sugar levels have to be higher and higher, in order to drive the glucose into the muscle cells to provide for the body's energy needs. At the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine we make every effort to tailor our weight loss diets to our patients' metabolism. Whole grains for some, more meat for others, plenty of fruits and non-starchy vegetables for everyone.

Dietetic Association's junk food sponsors

October 2008

Each fall, the American Dietetic Association sponsors the world's largest meeting of food and nutrition experts. The 2008 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo will be October 25–28 in Chicago.

Every year, the ADA brings together more than 10,000 registered dietitians, nutrition science researchers, policy makers, health-care providers and industry leaders to address key issues affecting the health of America. Their mission: to empower members to be the nation's food and nutrition leaders. The ADA Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the American Dietetic Association and a 501(c)3 charity. The ADA Foundation focuses on three initiatives: Scholarships, Healthy Weight for Kids, and Food & Nutrition Research.

Dr. Grout's comment:
It is interesting to note that the ADA Foundation's Corporate Sponsors include:

ADA Partner GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare
ADA Partner Pepsico
ADA Partner The Coca Cola Company
Premier Sponsor SOYJOY
Premier Sponsor Mars, Incorporated
Kraft Foods
Premier Sponsor Kellogg Company
Shasta Sales, Inc.
Knorr Brands

You've read commentaries from professionals concerned that we are drugging far too many of our kids. We know soda pop is bad for the body. We know the evidence against unfermented soy is damning, and that sugar-filled candy bars and carb-laden macaroni and cheese is not healthy food. "Kid food" is one of the reasons why cancer has become the chief cause of death in children between the ages of 1 and 14.

This type of corporate sponsorship is a pretty clear example of the conflicts of interest that cloud the nutrition messages. No wonder the American waistline is growing fatter and fatter and chronic illness is on the rise.

FDA's safety pronouncement for BPA is criticized

October 2008

A scientific panel ripped last month's draft report by the FDA which indicated that bisphenol A (BPA, a chemical in plastic), is safe. The FDA said, "current levels of exposure to BPA through food packaging do not pose an immediate health risk to the general population, including infants and babies."

On October 29th, a panel of scientists from government and academia released a highly critical report saying the FDA did not take into consideration scores of studies that have linked BPA to prostate cancer, diabetes and other health problems in animals when it completed a draft risk assessment of the chemical last month. The panel said the FDA didn't use enough infant formula samples and didn't adequately account for variations among the samples.

BPA is a chemical found in polycarbonate plastic - including some water bottles and baby bottles - and in the lining of canned goods. The chemical appears to have estrogen-like effects, and in animal studies it appears to accelerate puberty and pose a cancer risk. Some reports suggest BPA may interfere with chemotherapy, and in adults the chemical has been tied to higher risk for heart disease and diabetes.

The American Chemistry Council said its members will comply with whatever action the FDA decides to take. "If the agency determines that existing margins of safety are insufficient in infant applications, our member companies that manufacture BPA will put processes in place to promptly phase out the use of materials containing BPA in baby bottles and infant formula packaging," an ACC spokeswoman said.

Dr. Grout's comment:
Many of the studies that the panel said the FDA ignored were reviewed by the National Toxicology Program, which concluded in September that it had "some concern" that BPA can affect brain and behavioral development in infants and small children.

BPA is used to harden plastic and is found in the lining of nearly every soft drink and canned food product, including infant formula. Infants and children are more vulnerable to the health effects of many chemicals. Last week, the Canadian government said it would ban bisphenol A in baby bottles. Parents would be wise to avoid BPA as soon as possible. The writing is on the wall.
